California faced a dual disaster on Friday, January 10, as a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck near the San Francisco Bay Area while deadly wildfires continued to ravage Los Angeles County.
Earthquake Details
The earthquake occurred at 7:02 a.m. PT, three miles east of the San Francisco Zoo, with a depth of 8.4 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Fortunately, no injuries or structural damages have been reported so far.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie responded swiftly, emphasizing the city’s preparedness. In a statement, he said:
“I promised to make the safety of San Franciscans my first priority as mayor, and I am keeping that promise today with this morning’s earthquake. I ordered city government into action immediately, and our first responders have been out across the city ensuring the safety of our residents.”
Wildfires Continue to Devastate Los Angeles County
Approximately 350 miles south of San Francisco, Los Angeles County is grappling with devastating wildfires that have claimed at least 10 lives and displaced 180,000 residents. Reports indicate that over 10,000 homes and structures have been destroyed in the past few days.
Emergency responders and officials remain on high alert as Californians endure the combined impact of seismic activity and widespread wildfires. The state is urging residents to stay vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and remain prepared for further emergencies.
