Self-acclaimed man of God, Shephered Bushiri has turned himself in to police after South Africa issued an arrest warrant against him for skipping bail and fleeing home to Malawi.

The controversial millonaire Pastor and his wife, Mary, are currently facing charges of money laundering and fraud in South Africa.

Police in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe say the couple surrendered on Wednesday as officers were looking for them following an arrest warrant they received from Interpol.

According to BBC he told his social media followers on Saturday that he had left the country due to the death threats he received but refused to reveal how he was able to escape.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Bushiri and his wife were smuggled out last week by a sophisticated syndicate which specialises in taking stolen cars from South Africa to Malawi.

Mr Bushiri has been described as one of the richest religious leaders in Africa and is well known across the region.

He claims to have cured people of HIV, made the blind see, changed the fortunes of the impoverished and, on at least one occasion, appeared to walk on air, although none of these claims have been scientifically proven.

The self-acclaimed prophet has been accused of money laundering and fraud involving 102 million South African rand ($6.6m; £5m) along with his wife and two others.

Amongst other things, he has also been accused of preying on poor people, desperate to improve their lives, by selling merchandise including “miracle oil”.
