Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has made a significant move to support retirees in the state’s public service by clearing N68.5 billion in pension arrears. This announcement was made by the Head of Service, Lagos State, Mr. Bode Agoro, during a public sensitization program on the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) organized by the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC).

The CPS, which was enacted on March 19, 2007, aims to provide a sustainable retirement plan, ensuring financial security for staff upon retirement ¹. Since its introduction, various government policies have been implemented to strengthen the Nigerian pension industry, safeguard citizens’ savings, and protect workers’ retirement benefits.

Sanwo-Olu’s efforts have been praised for prioritizing the well-being of public servants and retirees. The governor’s commitment to ensuring senior citizens receive their retirement benefits promptly after exiting service has been particularly commendable.

This development is a significant step towards supporting retirees in Lagos State and demonstrates the government’s commitment to their well-being.
