Governor Uzodinma Approves ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for Imo Workers

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants in the state.

The announcement also included the commencement of gratuity payments for retirees, addressing outstanding payments owed to 4,529 local government retirees and 6,427 state-level retirees, some dating back to 2006.

The decision followed the submission of a report by an implementation committee comprising representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Union Negotiating Council, and the state government. The committee concluded a two-day meeting to finalize the terms.

Governor Uzodinma stated, “All the unions operating in the state had agreed on the minimum wage, and in addition, those on consolidated salaries who are already on ₦70,000 minimum wage will receive an additional 10% increase on their salaries.”

He further disclosed that gratuity payments would begin on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. The first batch would cover 2,962 local government retirees and 2,742 state-level retirees. The remaining 1,567 local government retirees and 2,685 state retirees will be compensated in subsequent batches.

The Governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of Imo workers and ensuring that pensioners, who served the state diligently, are adequately rewarded.

Speaking on behalf of the workforce, Comrade Uche Chigemezu Nwaigwe, Chairman of the Imo State NLC, thanked the Governor for his generosity and support.

Similarly, TUC Chairman Comrade Uchenna Ibe Great pledged that workers would reciprocate the Governor’s goodwill with increased dedication and productivity in their roles.
