South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol faces an impeachment motion after his controversial attempt to impose martial law, which caused political upheaval across the nation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 3, when Yoon’s brief martial law declaration sought to ban political activities and censor the media. However, he was forced to withdraw the order within hours following strong opposition from parliament.
In response, opposition lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings, citing a breach of democratic principles. Representatives from six opposition parties, including the main Democratic Party, announced the motion during a live press briefing, accusing Yoon of attempting to undermine democracy.
Kim Yong-jin, a Democratic Party central committee member, stated, “We can no longer allow democracy to collapse. The lives and safety of the people must be protected.” The impeachment motion could be voted on as early as Friday.
The opposition has also called for charges of “rebellion” against Yoon, naming Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min as key collaborators in the martial law order.
Despite the political tension, daily activities in Seoul, including schools, banks, and government offices, continue as normal, though protests persist throughout the city. Yoon’s presidency, which began in 2022, now hangs in the balance as the impeachment process unfolds.
