The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed its decision to embark on a nationwide protest against the recent increase in petrol price, despite earlier denials. The Senate President of NANS, Henry Okuomo, made this clear during an appearance on Channels Television on Friday, September 6. Okuomo emphasized that the association is not merely threatening a strike but is determined to take action due to the current hardships faced by Nigerians. He stated, “We are facing hardship, and now, the government has increased fuel prices again. This has affected us as students. And as student leaders, we don’t have a choice now but to fight for the people.” The NANS Senate President highlighted the significant stake that students have in the country, citing the over 40 million Nigerian students. He asserted, “We think we should make our voice loud at this time to save the Nigerian people from this undue stress and suffering being put upon them by the government.” Okuomo confirmed that the protest will take place on the 15th of the month, stating, “We have determined that on the 15th of this month, no going back. We are hitting the street hard.” This announcement comes after the president of the association, Afeez Akinteye, had earlier denied plans to organize a protest against the fuel price increase. However, Okuomo’s statement has clarified the association’s stance, indicating that NANS is committed to taking action against the government’s decision.
