Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has emerged the Director General, World Trade Organisation, WTO.
This has made her to become the first woman and African to head the global watchdog in its 25-year history.
In a keenly contested election, Okonjo-Iweala beat her rival, South Korean Yoo Myung hee, with a wide margin. She polled 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat Myung Hee at the final stage of the race.
According to Reuters, a key group of WTO ambassadors has proposed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to lead the UN agency.
The recommendation of former World Bank managing director, was made by three WTO ambassadors, the so-called “troika”.
Okonjo-Iweala received widespread support from Africa and other continents before the election which took place today October 28.
