On Tuesday, Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa, Chief Judge of Edo State, presided over the swearing-in of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the sixth executive governor of Edo State. The ceremony, attended by dignitaries, political figures, and enthusiastic citizens, marked a new chapter in the state’s leadership, with Okpebholo succeeding former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Okpebholo assumes office following a decisive win in the September 21 gubernatorial election, where he garnered 291,667 votes to surpass Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,244 votes. The event also included the swearing-in of Dennis Idahosa as Deputy Governor, supported by family, friends, and prominent members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
During his administration, Obaseki initiated numerous projects in infrastructure and education, and addressed governance reforms. As Okpebholo steps into office, he inherits both the achievements and unfinished tasks of his predecessor, with expectations high for him to continue advancing the state.
Obaseki, absent from the inauguration, held a farewell session at Government House in Benin City last Friday, where he dissolved his cabinet and praised the outgoing State Executive Council for their commitment to his vision of a prosperous Edo State.
