Private employers who pay less than N70,000 to their workers risk jail time, according to the Federal Government. Kachollom Daju, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, made this clear at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria in Ikeja, Lagos ¹ ².

The government emphasized that the new minimum wage is necessary to address the current economic reality, ensuring no Nigerian worker, whether in public or private employment, earns less than N70,000 ¹ ². This minimum wage is now a law, and failing to implement it can lead to punishable consequences, including jail time.

*Key Points to Note:*

– _Minimum Wage Requirement_: The least paid worker in Nigeria should earn N70,000, after all deductions ¹ ².
– _Implementation Enforcement_: Private employment agencies must make it compulsory in any contract to pay workers the minimum wage ¹ ².
– _Government Commitment_: The Federal Government is committed to ensuring the least paid worker goes home with N70,000 ¹ ².

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also weighed in, urging private employers to pay the N70,000 minimum wage, considering the current economic hardship ¹ ².
