Prophetess Naomi and Seven Others Arrested Over Ibadan Stampede That Claimed 35 Children’s Lives

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, along with seven others, in connection with a tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan. The incident occurred during a family event organized by Wings Foundation and media partner Agidigbo FM, resulting in the deaths of 35 minors and injuries to six others.

In a statement released by the police spokesperson, SP Adewale Osifeso, the following individuals were arrested on Tuesday, December 19:

  • Fasasi Abdulahi, 56 (School Principal, Islamic High School)
  • Genesis Christopher, 24
  • Tanimowo Moruf, 52
  • Anisolaja Olabode, 42

  • Abiola Oluwatimilehin, 25

The police confirmed the transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Iyaganku, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the investigation.

“So far, 35 minors have been confirmed dead, while six others are critically injured and undergoing medical interventions,” the statement read.

To prevent further escalation, the police have increased patrols and deployed officers to the affected area. The command urged residents to remain calm and avoid panic.

The Oyo State Police Command extended its condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that justice would be served.
