President Bola Tinubu has defended his decision to maintain a 48-member cabinet, dismissing criticisms that it is overly large and emphasizing the need for effective governance.

During a media chat at his Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday, December 23, Tinubu addressed concerns about the size of his cabinet, stating, “I am not ready to shrink the size of my cabinet.” He explained that the appointments were made with efficiency in mind, aligning with the administration’s objectives.

The president also reaffirmed his stance on the removal of the petrol subsidy, a policy enacted shortly after he assumed office in May 2023.

“I don’t have any regrets whatsoever in removing petrol subsidy,” Tinubu said. “We were spending our future and deceiving ourselves. That reform was necessary.”

He further criticized the subsidy as unsustainable, noting that it disproportionately benefited neighboring countries rather than Nigerians. “Nigeria can no longer play ‘Father Christmas’ to others,” he added.

Tinubu’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates about his administration’s policies and governance approach. Despite public scrutiny, the president underscored his commitment to the decisions made so far, asserting they are essential for Nigeria’s progress.
