VETERAN ACTOR JOHN AMOS PASSES AWAY AT 84
Beloved American actor John Amos, renowned for his iconic roles in “Roots” and “Coming to America,” has died at the age of 84. His son, K.C. Amos, confirmed the news, stating that his father passed away due to natural causes on August 21 in Los Angeles.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” K.C. Amos said in a statement. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father.”
Born in 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, Amos initially pursued a football career before transitioning to acting in 1970. He made notable appearances on “The Cosby Show” and “The Tim Conway Comedy Hour” before landing his breakout role as Gordy the weatherman on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
Amos’ illustrious career spanned multiple iconic roles:
– James Evans Sr. on the groundbreaking sitcom “Good Times” (1974-1976)
– Emmy-nominated performance in the 1977 miniseries “Roots”
– Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on “The West Wing” (1999-2004)
– King Jaffe Joffer in “Coming to America” (1988)
“Good Times” was particularly significant, as it represented one of television’s first Black two-parent families. Amos reflected on the show’s impact, telling Time magazine in 2021, “That show was the closest depiction in reality to life as an African American family living in those circumstances as it could be.”
John Amos’ legacy will continue to inspire through his remarkable body of work.
