Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cast doubt on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s prospects of securing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the 2027 presidential election, asserting it is highly unlikely.
During a live media session in Abuja on Wednesday evening, Wike stated that Atiku’s chances are virtually nonexistent, expressing confidence that the PDP would look to new leadership for its future direction. He emphasized the need for the party to select a candidate capable of uniting the party and appealing to voters, noting that internal dynamics were shifting and that a fresh face could inspire greater support among Nigerians.
Wike pointed to Atiku’s multiple attempts to present his political vision to the Nigerian public, observing that his previous bids were consistently rejected by voters. “Did he not present his blueprint before Nigerians? Did Nigerians choose him?” Wike asked, underscoring his belief that the party needs new ideas to resonate with the electorate.
Reflecting on Atiku’s recent remarks suggesting he would have handled economic policies differently from President Bola Tinubu, Wike dismissed the notion of another run. “He is lobbying for another chance. The chance will not be there. How can we use one man for so many years?”
Drawing a comparison to the U.S. political scene, Wike noted that just as Americans ultimately prioritized their nation’s best interests when electing a leader, PDP too should focus on candidates who can genuinely move Nigeria forward.
