The High Commission of Canada to Nigeria has announced a donation of $750,000 to support women’s rights organisations in their struggle to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria.
This was announced yesterday via Twitter. The tweet said: “Canada is please to announce an additional $750K for its Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria project with @ActionAidNG to help women’s rights orgs ramp-up efforts to #EndSGBV, which has worsened during #COVID19”
The Canadian commission expressed grief and concern about the elevated cases of molestation, sexual assaults and rape in the country during the past few months.
According to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, a total of 717 rape cases has been reported nationwide between January and May this year. 631 cases out of the 717 cases had been concluded with the suspects already in court.
