Senate Confirms Maj.Gen Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday 22nd June 2021, at plenary hearing, confirmed the appointment of Maj. Gen Faruk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff. The confirmation came after the adoption of the report of its joint Committee on Defence and Army.

Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto), while presenting the report, said the committee found the nominee suitable for the position, given his display of in-depth knowledge and experience on strategic tactics of military operations.

He added that the committee also screened the nominee on issues relating to funding of military operations, general war on terror, insurgency and banditry, strategic military operations, such as hard ware and intelligence sharing among others.

“committee members were satisfied with robust nature of the engagement and interactions from the nominee. The committee also found out that his nomination was in line with the constitution,” he said.

Wamakko went further to reveal that the committee did not receive any petition on the nominee. He said that the nominee had the required academic qualifications to occupy the position of Chief of Army Staff and has been cleared by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and also has presented his code of conduct acknowledgement slip.

In addition to that, Sen. Ali Ndume, (APC -Bornu) a member of the Committee and Chairman, Committee on Army urged the Senate to confirm the nominee to enable him execute some responsibilities which he could not discharge in acting capacity.

Sen, Gabriel Suswam (PDP-Benue) said the nominee if confirmed would be able to tackle the issues of terrorism and insurgency, given his last posting, adding that the nominee was knowledgeable on how to tackle issues of insurgency.

President of Senate, Ahmad Lawan, in his remark also noted that the presence of all the committee members at the screening of the nominee showed commitment, and how serious and patriotic the senate is on issues of security of the nation.

He said the military alone can not resolve the security challenges, saying that it required the effort and support of all Nigerians.
