The caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to remove and prosecute the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, over alleged partisanship ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call was made public by caucus leader Afam Ogene, who expressed deep concerns about the chairman’s ability to conduct a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
According to Ogene, the caucus is worried about what it described as a lack of neutrality on the part of the INEC boss. He noted that recent public statements and actions attributed to Amupitan suggest bias and a possible alignment with the ruling party.
“These developments have raised serious questions about his impartiality,” Ogene said, adding that the situation could undermine public trust in the electoral body.
The caucus also pointed to alleged social media activity linked to Amupitan, claiming he made partisan comments and shared controversial posts in support of the government. While INEC has denied that the chairman owns the X (formerly Twitter) account in question, Ogene insisted that digital forensic checks and independent online investigations indicate otherwise.
He argued that the controversy has cast doubt on the chairman’s transparency and integrity, further fueling concerns about his suitability for the role at such a critical political period.
“In light of these inconsistencies and the growing concerns over his impartiality, the caucus is calling for his immediate removal from office and his prosecution,” Ogene stated.
