INEC considers making NIN compulsory for voter registration

1

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is considering making the National Identity Number a precondition for registering voters when the continuous voter registration exercise commences in a few weeks.

According to Punch, a national commissioner at INEC who wished to remain anonymous because he was not authorised to speak, disclosed this during an interview on Tuesday.

According to the commissioner, the NIN would help tackle challenges of underage voting, alien voting and other challenges associated with registration. He disclosed that a final decision would soon be reached.
