Shenu Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna central in the 9th assembly has kicked against the screening of Lauretta Onochie, as a commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mr Sani, who is a former member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said Ms Onochie is undeserving of being INEC commissioner. He stressed that her presence in the electoral body will “undoubtedly question its credibility and independence.”

“Lauretta is outrightly undeserving of being a commissioner in @inecnigeria;Her presence in the electoral body will undoubtedly question its credibility and independence. Her denial before the screening committee is baseless. She is a partisan agent of the ruling party; Period,” he wrote on Twitter.

Ms Onochie nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari and screening by the Senate, have triggered controversy on social media. Many Civil Society Organisations have called the Senate to reject her nomination, citing her activities in the past as excuses.

A lawyer also approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the nomination.

Although Ms Onochie told the Senate on Thursday 8th July 2021, that she stopped being an active politician in 2019, a POLITICS NIGERIA fact check proved otherwise.

The fact check showed that she swore an affidavit earlier this year where she claimed to still be a member of APC.
