Sweetwaters, Kenya – Tragedy struck at Hillside Endarasha Academy, a primary school in Nyeri county, central Kenya, on Thursday night, September 5, when a devastating fire swept through a dormitory, claiming the lives of at least 17 pupils.
The cause of the blaze, which occurred around midnight local time, is still unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the death toll and reported that 14 pupils were injured in the fire.
The fire was so intense that it burned the students beyond recognition, according to Citizen Television. The dormitory was occupied by more than 150 pupils at the time of the incident.
Kenyan President William Ruto has expressed his condolences and instructed relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragedy. “I instruct relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this horrific incident. Those responsible will be held to account,” Ruto posted on X.
A team of investigators has been deployed to the school, and police chief Pius Murugu is leading the probe. The authorities have promised to provide more details on the incident later.
