Nigeria’s military leaders have issued a stern warning to individuals calling for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government, labeling such demands as treasonable. The warning comes after a viral video showed citizens expressing frustration with the country’s economic hardship, citing the removal of fuel subsidies and the floatation of the Naira ¹.
Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, condemned the calls, stating that advocating for a military takeover is an attempt to cause discord in the nation. He emphasized the military’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democracy and the Tinubu administration, citing the president’s backing of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) as a reason for the current relative peace ¹.
Gusau clarified that advocating for a coup is a treasonable offense under Nigeria’s Constitution, and those found guilty will face the full force of the law. The military has been tasked with taking necessary action against any group or individual pushing for unconstitutional changes, with a focus on protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and upholding democratic governance.
