Kamala Harris has officially conceded the U.S. presidential election to Donald Trump, calling him to offer congratulations hours after the final results confirmed her defeat.
In their phone conversation, Harris emphasized the significance of a peaceful transfer of power and underscored the importance of governing as a president for all Americans, according to a senior aide. Harris is expected to address the nation later Wednesday in Washington.
With the electoral count standing at 292 votes for Trump and 224 for Harris, Trump secured a clear path to the White House, surpassing the required 270 votes needed to win.
This victory makes Trump the first president in over 130 years, and only the second in U.S. history, to win a non-consecutive second term. Exit polls reveal that Trump achieved this by gaining traction with nearly every voting bloc he lost in 2020, forming a coalition of multi-ethnic, working-class voters that ultimately propelled him to victory.
