The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced the approval of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for workers in the FCT.
Wike disclosed the decision during a press briefing on Monday, emphasizing his commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants. He stated that the adjustment aligns with the administration’s efforts to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
“This administration recognizes the dedication of our workforce and the pressing economic realities they face daily. As such, we have approved a minimum wage of ₦70,000 for all FCT workers,” Wike said.
The revised wage comes amid ongoing calls for improved living conditions following the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has significantly increased the cost of living.
Wike assured that the implementation of the new wage would commence immediately, and mechanisms are being put in place to ensure prompt payment.
“Workers are the backbone of any administration. This increase is a reflection of our commitment to their well-being and to fostering a productive and motivated workforce,” he added.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions. While many FCT workers welcomed the increase as a relief, others have expressed concerns about its adequacy in light of rising inflation.
This move places the FCT ahead of other states in addressing labor demands for a wage increase, setting a potential benchmark for other state governments to follow.
