The Federal University Gusau (FUG) has publicly disassociated itself from the embattled former Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Professor Charles Esimone, alleging that his professorship was fraudulently acquired.
In a statement issued on Friday, FUG clarified that Esimone, who had previously claimed ties to the institution, was never on its academic staff and did not meet the requirements to hold the title of professor.
“The university wishes to unequivocally state that Charles Esimone was never affiliated with our institution in any capacity, and any claims to the contrary are baseless,” the statement read.
Esimone was recently dismissed from his role at UNIZIK amid allegations of financial misconduct and academic malpractice. The revelation by FUG further intensifies scrutiny of his credentials, which have come under question during investigations into his tenure as Vice-Chancellor.
The university also called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough review of Esimone’s academic qualifications and previous appointments.
This development has sparked reactions across the academic community, with many calling for stricter measures to verify the qualifications of senior university officials.
