Bayelsa Regains Power After Four-Month Blackout
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Port Harcourt Region, has successfully restored electricity to most parts of Bayelsa State after a prolonged four-month power outage.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the General Manager of TCN’s Port Harcourt Region, Emmanuel Anyaegbulem, confirmed the restoration of power, citing acts of vandalism as the cause of the extended blackout. He revealed that around 20 transmission towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132KV line, the sole power supply line to Bayelsa, were destroyed on July 29.
“The 132KV line is the only transmission line supplying electricity to Bayelsa State,” Anyaegbulem explained. “The damage caused by vandalism was significant, and restoring the towers was a major challenge. However, power was fully restored on November 30.”
He noted that constructing a single transmission tower costs approximately N13 million, underscoring the financial burden caused by vandalism.
Addressing security efforts, Anyaegbulem reported that police assigned to TCN have made considerable progress in curbing such sabotage. In 2024 alone, ten individuals were apprehended for vandalizing TCN infrastructure. Four have already been convicted, while the remaining six suspects are awaiting trial.
Anyaegbulem reiterated TCN’s dedication to ensuring reliable electricity supply to Distribution Companies (DisCos) and, ultimately, to consumers, despite challenges.
The power restoration marks a significant relief for Bayelsa residents, who endured months of darkness caused by infrastructure damage.
