The Edwin Woko-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has hit back at Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), over his recent declaration that the APC is determined to win the Rivers governorship seat in 2027.
Ganduje, speaking during the inauguration of the Tony Okocha-led APC state executive in Port Harcourt on Saturday, announced that taking control of Rivers State’s Government House is a key goal for the APC in the next election cycle.
In a swift response, PDP factional leader Edwin Woko dismissed Ganduje’s remarks, insisting that there is “no vacancy” in Rivers State come 2027.
“The good people of Rivers State will leave no stone unturned to ensure that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s second-term bid remains unhindered,” Woko declared.
He added, “Rivers people have rejected APC in the past, and they will continue to reject APC and its anti-people policies. Governor Fubara will contest and win the 2027 election under the PDP platform, regardless of the challenges and disunity being caused by political infiltrators. These APC-sponsored agents within our party will soon fade into irrelevance.”
Woko further accused the APC of manipulating elections in other states and vowed that Rivers would resist any attempt to subvert the democratic process.
“The rape of democracy witnessed during the last gubernatorial election in Edo State will not be tolerated here. Elections in Rivers State will be decided by the votes of the people, not by ‘capturing’ or robbing citizens of their mandate with the help of compromised security agents or other manipulations the APC may plan,” he said.
The exchange underscores the growing political tension in Rivers State as both parties begin positioning for the 2027 governorship election.
