Joe Biden, former vice president and the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, on Wednesday July 22, labeled President Trump as the country’s first racist to be elected to the White House.
Biden made this statement during a virtual town hall organized by the Service Employees International Union after a health-care worker expressed concern that Trump continues to blame Asians for the coronavirus pandemic as Trump and other White House officials have routinely referred to the coronavirus as the “China virus,” or the “Wuhan virus,” and even, “the Kung Flu.
Biden in response to the questioner’s concern said, “the way he deals with people based on the color of their skin, their national origin, where they’re from, is absolutely sickening.”
“No sitting president has ever done this. Never, never, never. No Republican president has done this. No Democratic president. We’ve had racists, and they’ve existed, they’ve tried to get elected president. He’s the first one that has,” He added.
Biden continued, “And the way he pits people against one another is all designed to divide the country, divide people, not pull them together. Look what he’s doing now. He’s blaming everything on China. . . . He’s using it as a wedge.”
Trump when was asked about Biden’s comment during a White House news briefing, touted his record and said, as he has many times in the past, that he’d “done more for black Americans than anybody with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln. Nobody has even been close.”
Also, Katrina Pierson, a Trump campaign senior adviser, directly addressed Biden’s comments, calling them “an insult to the intelligence of black voters”.
Pierson said, “President Trump loves all people, works hard to empower all Americans, and is supported by more black voters than any Republican presidential candidate in modern history, No one should take lectures on racial justice from Joe Biden.”
