The Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Barkindo Mohammed, has described the flooding situation in Maiduguri as “terrible” after the Alau Dam collapsed early Tuesday morning. The disaster has resulted in widespread flooding, submerging several wards in the city and leaving thousands of residents displaced.

Mohammed reported that SEMA is working to rescue those affected, distributing sandbags to mitigate the rising water levels. However, he revealed that even his team has become trapped while attempting to save others.

“We are currently trapped while trying to rescue people in Gozari,” Mohammed said. “We went to distribute sandbags, but now we are stuck with my staff. The situation is dire, and we are doing our best to respond to the crisis.”

The collapse of the Alau Dam has caused chaos in Maiduguri, with many residents scrambling to find safer locations. SEMA is working to provide aid and support to those affected, but the situation remains critical.
