Following the sudden death of Burundi’s  President, Pierre Nkurunziza, court has ordered the immediate swearing in of the President elect, Evariste Ndayishimiye.

Constitutionally, the speaker of parliament, Pascal Nyabenda, should have completed the late President’s tenure. However, the court has ruled that out saying that the interim period under the Speaker of Parliament was intended to keep the Presidential seat warm while awaiting the time of election. But having gone ahead with the Elections in May amidst the pandemic and having the incumbent president loose to Evariste, there is no need for an interim occupancy and therefore the President elect should be sworn in as soon as possible.

The country has only recorded 85 coronavirus cases with 1 death and 45 recoveries. Although there are some suppositions that the late President died of the coronavirus, but that has not been validated yet.

Just a week before the death of Pierre, he said, ‘God has cleared the coronavirus from our atmosphere’. The elections were held in May despite the global death wave, and the representative of the World Health Organization in the country was discharged.
