Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has cleared Senator Dino Melaye of all allegations, including attempted suicide, escape from custody, and damage to police property ¹ ² ³ ⁴. Melaye, who represented Kogi West district in the National Assembly, was arraigned on March 5, 2019, on a six-count charge.
The charges stemmed from an incident on April 24, 2018, where Melaye allegedly forced his way out of a police vehicle and escaped while being conveyed to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. Prosecutors claimed he threatened to harm himself and broke the vehicle’s glass with his elbow, causing damage to police property.
However, after a lengthy trial, Justice Oriji discharged and acquitted Melaye of all charges. The prosecution had called five witnesses and presented 10 exhibits to support their case, but ultimately failed to prove Melaye’s guilt.
