Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has made history by becoming the newly confirmed Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN)! She was confirmed by the Senate on September 25, 2024, after serving in an acting capacity since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola ¹ ² ³.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s journey to confirmation began when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted a request to the Senate, which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary session on September 24 ¹. This request was made in accordance with section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the President the authority to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Commission (NJC) ¹.

On Wednesday, September 25, Justice Kekere-Ekun arrived at the Senate Chamber at 12:30 PM, accompanied by other esteemed Justices from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal ¹. Her confirmation marks a significant milestone in her illustrious career, and we can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make as the new CJN!
