Nigeria Poised for 24-Hour Power Supply Within Five Years – TCN
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has made a bold promise: Nigeria will achieve a stable 24-hour power supply within the next five years. This ambitious goal was revealed by TCN’s Managing Director, Engineer Abdulaziz, during an interview with Channels TV [1).
According to Abdulaziz, Nigeria is capable of generating between 20,000 and 25,000 megawatts (MW) of power, sufficient for consistent supply. When asked about the feasibility of achieving this target within ten years, Abdulaziz confidently replied, “We are going to get it in less than five years” [1).
The TCN boss attributed his optimism to the current minister’s problem-solving approach, focused on increasing power supply in the country. He also highlighted that some Nigerians already enjoy relatively stable power supply.
Interestingly, Nigeria already supplies neighboring countries Togo and Benin with 24-hour electricity ¹. Abdulaziz emphasized that system collapses do not necessarily originate from TCN, but can also stem from generation, transmission, or distribution issues.
While acknowledging infrastructure challenges, including outdated equipment, Abdulaziz argued that electricity in Nigeria is relatively affordable compared to other African countries.
With TCN’s commitment to delivering stable power supply, Nigerians can look forward to a brighter future.
