Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s low tax collection, stating that it hinders the government’s ability to deliver quality healthcare and other essential services.

Speaking at a Pan-African youth dialogue on nutrition in Abuja on September 3, Gates emphasized the need for effective tax collection to fund health programs. He noted that Nigeria’s tax collection is “pretty low” and that increasing it is crucial for the government to gain citizens’ trust in its ability to deliver quality services.

Gates highlighted the importance of efficient management of health programs, citing examples of successful primary healthcare systems supported by his foundation. He stressed that well-run programs can help build confidence in the government’s ability to deliver essential services.

The billionaire philanthropist’s comments come as Nigeria faces challenges in funding its healthcare and education sectors. Gates’ foundation has been involved in various initiatives in Nigeria, aimed at improving healthcare and nutrition outcomes.
