Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has expressed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, which have sparked significant debate across the country. Despite strong criticism from northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional rulers, Gumi believes the reforms hold promise for all Nigerians but called for adjustments to specific provisions.
The tax reforms, which passed their second reading in the Senate last week, have drawn opposition from northern leaders who argue that the policies could deepen economic challenges in the region. This resistance has fueled ongoing tensions between stakeholders in the North and South.
In a recent interview with Daily Post, Gumi highlighted the contentious Value Added Tax (VAT) proposal as a critical issue requiring further review. “The contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all,” he said, emphasizing the broader potential benefits of the reform.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has clarified that the tax reform bills are designed to enhance overall national development and not to disproportionately favor states like Lagos and Rivers, as some critics have claimed. The government argues that the reforms aim to improve the quality of life for all Nigerians through better fiscal policies.
